Urban Execution [UE] Interview
Posted by alpha on 26/10/2000.Finnish based [UE] have basically come from being "that Finnish clan in the Clanbase international ladder" to a highly respected European clan in the space of a few months. For ages they played mostly Clanbase matches, but they've recently started moving into other competitions. It looks like they're going to come out on top of this seasons' UKTFCL, against top UK competition such as the likes of [DW] and =BC=, and they're also not doing too badly in Season 2 of the ETFCL.
How did your clan get started?
Well ouch, this is going to be hard. UE started shortly after TFC came out by me and my mate Trojax. We both had experience from QW and Trojax had been playing HLDM for 4 months (while I just played QWDM) and he had heard about this great new mod, TFC, so we decided to try it out and boy did we like it ;). Man.. I remember downloading it with my 56k modem (yes.. even I was an HPW once ;) ). Well anyways there we were with Trojax playing on servers with the tag [UE], 0wnin, asking ppl for trials.. etc. (btw we thought of the name during our english class, teacher wasn't that happy when I shouted "URBAN EXECUTION, THAT'S A GOOD NAME" during the lesson ;)). Then we found couple of nice people (Chris , Battleangel and FraggE were the 1st ones to join) which we got into the clan and man we had fun. We didn't use IRC then, just ICQ, anyway there we were and err.. didn't know that UE would be this big someday.
What was your first clan match and what was the result?
Our 1st "match" was vs 750, 3vs3 on public server :D (the game was pre-arranged, we just didn't find a server) I think we won the match like... 30-15 or so.
Out of all the matches you've played, which would you say was the most difficult and why?
Definentely our match vs Clan Erinyes, best US clan at their time. We had hard time on their server (~300 pings and had to play Openfire for the
1st time).. we lost map there 0-130 (O-u-c-h!) and then we moved to our server where we WON well 80-70 ;)

Which is your favourite map to play clan matches on and why?
I wouldn't say that I've got one certain favourite. I love to play Shutdown_l, Well, Openfire, Shutdown2, Crossover2, Canalzone2. Don't know what
would be the favourite of those though.

Out of all the clans you've played, which do you respect most and why?
Hmm well this is a hard one. There are so many clans we've played and it's hard to say which one we respect the most. DW, BC, Tj, D-walk, tmcS, ERA for example.. there are MANY clans which we also respect, I'd say 95% of the clans we've played against should be in that list.
Out of all the clans you've played, who has surprised you the most?
Again It's hard to say anything to this. I'd say NTT, as they really surprised us (and many others) when they beat us before they quit.
Are there any players from other clans you've seen who you'd love to recruit?
Definently. I'm not saying any names here for the sake of UE :D.
What things have you learnt as a clan since you started?
Teamplay, thats a thing which we have learned. Also our people know each other quite well nowadays, which leads to better teamplay.
Did you lose a lot of players when the "big" TFC patch was released, changing TFC into TF1.5?
At the start we only lost 1 or 2 players because of the patch but some of our old players who were active before the patch have started going inactive as well, mostly because of the patch and also because they just didn't like to play TFC anymore :/ ... so I'd say we've lost like 5 players or so overall.
Why did you only play matches in the Clan Base International ladder for so long before expanding into other competitions?
Actually now when I'm thinking we started in OGL ladder (american ladder), being #15 there for a moment (without having any matches played
;)) but problems with time/ping to US forced us to find a new league, like
Clanbase. We basically played only in Clanbase because we just didn't know that there were any other good leagues in Europe, I mean the first time I heard about UKTFCL was at end of UKTFCL S2.

Have you found that the style of play is different when playing matches for Clan Base to matches for the UKTFCL or ETFCL?
Well it kinda depends, every clan no matter where they're based on have the certain tactics for TFC for example, so I wouldn't say that the style of play is different. Maybe the matches might be harder on e.g. ETFCL than in UKTFCL, but mainly no matter where you play your matches the game is basically the same.
Do you see your clan progressing into other games, such as UnF, Q3A, CS or TF2?
I'd say definently TF2 at least. I've been trying to set up a Q3A squad but others dont like the idea which kind of rules that opportunity out :)
